The Morpho Towers, magnetic-fluid art sculptures

skodama2013sJust like we showed you with the Mandelbrot example, the following art-piece is another amazing example of how science and art can be combined in practice. The Morpho Towers are made by Sachiko Kodamaan amazing Japanese woman who graduated from both the physics course in the Department of Science at Hokkaido University as well as the Master’s and Doctoral Program in Art and Design at the University of Tsukuba.

The sculpture is made out of so called ‘ferro-sluid’, an intriguing black ink containing minuscule magnetic particles. Holding a strong magnet near the fluid will trigger the magnetic particles to rearrange themselves by reacting to the change in magnetic fields around it, hence creating the amazing forms and shapes that you see in the video.
